Introductions – Monday/Wednesday Discussion

Introductions

Preparation: Knowing yourself.
First Response: Welcome to Interface! What do you want to be when you grow up? What are you hoping to be when you leave here? Did you know that recent studies have shown that most people change careers at least 4 times in their lives? Could you envision yourself doing something else? Becoming a CEO? Flying an airplane?

Have you gone to school before? Where? How long ago? (If you want to disclose that information!) Then tell us something about yourself that we couldn’t guess just by looking at you.

Second Response: Please read some of your classmates’ responses and reply to them. Engage them in a conversation about their interests and yours.

First response is due by the end of class on Wednesday. Second responses (2) are due by Monday, 1/13/2014 by 6pm (before the start of class.) You can respond to me. For this post, there is no necessary word count, but future blog discussions will have word counts (for instance, it will say your initial response must be 200 words and your replies have to be 100 words, or something of that nature.)

Michelle – Week 1 Discussion

ability-to-smell-fear-cartoon-sm

Do an internet search on “current resume trends” – read at least three articles and summarize what you find after you give the links. Copy and paste three URLs of the sites you find. Do you agree or disagree? How do they differ from what is in the PD website or what you’ve been told by myself or Margaret, if they do differ? Will you use any of the information, if so, what and why? Your results should be trends in the last 2 years.

For a bit of extra credit, find a sample resume you really like and attach it and tell us what is great about it and why. Then, find a sample of a bad resume and attach it. What changes (just a few) could be made to make it better? I’ll give 30 pts of Extra Credit for this!

First response should be at least 200 words and is due on Thursday January 9th. Second response should be at least 75 words and is due by Tuesday, January 14th by 6pm.

Goodbye Dear Friends + New Program Incoming!! (Both Classes)

This blog is a little convoluted, so please bear with me. We have two people leaving our Monday/Wednesday Class and going on to new things. We are also starting a new program upon your return in January.

byeybyeMonday/Wednesday: Please take a moment to say Goodbye to Maria and Danielle. Write them a short bit of praise. Then, answer these questions: 1. Have you ever Used PowerPoint? 2. How familiar are you with PowerPoint? 3. What scares you about PowerPoint? 4. What are you looking forward to in PowerPoint? If you are Maria or Danielle, please take a moment to say goodbye to your classmates. Write a bit of praise for each one, listing them by name. Then, give them advice on PowerPoint and Excel.

Tuesday/Thursday: We are starting Excel in January. Have you ever used Excel? What are you looking forward to in Excel? What are you afraid of in Excel? How do you think you will do in Excel? Go to http://students.interface.edu/dawn/examples.html and look at the 2 things students have created on how to do something in Excel. Then, do a google search and give me 1 link to a site that is meant to help you with Excel. What are some of the features of the site? How will it be helpful, do you think?

Life is Stress. Talk about it amongst yourselves. (Both Classes)

Stress Relief. Find it!

Stress is a constant in our lives.  A little amount of stress is good and needed to keep us alert, sharp and focused.  However, all too often our stress levels get elevated and out of control, especially when you are in school and the holidays are approaching.

This week, you need to find a minimum of three (3) websites that deal with managing and reducing stress.  You posting should be four (4) paragraphs.  The first three (3) paragraphs should be headed by the website and then a brief four or five sentence synopsis of what you learned about managing and reducing stress in your life.  The last paragraph will be an explanation of the best ideas you found and the ones you would like to (will?) put into practice in your own life. Like such:

Website Title – Link

Paragraph about it

Website Title – Link

The Best Ideas (or whatever you want to call it)

Paragraph (or list of) these items with explanations.

Remember, this assignment is part of your online attendance. Do it. FIRST.

Week 4 Discussion – Tuesday/Thursday Class

Final Presentations

For your final project each of you will present a PowerPoint Presentation to the class.  Answer the following questions:

  • What is your topic or what topics are you considering?
  • Will your presentation be persuasive or informative? Why did you choose this method?
  • What are you using to gather information about your topic?

Remember if you use information from another source that is not something you created – you will have to give credit to the owner. Therefore, you will have a last slide named references or Works Cited where you give the author’s name and the link (if found via the web) to your source. This does not have to be in an academic format, but if you use a picture from http://www.fakesource.com/pictureofcow.jpg, it should read: Fake Source–Picture of cow: LINK HERE at the least.

  • Will you look primarily on the web for your sources, or do you have sources of your own that you will be using?
  • What type of media are you going to be using?

Read “Avoiding Common Mistakes in an Introduction” on PRES 30-31 in your PowerPoint Book.  Have you ever seen a presentation where one of these mistakes was made?  If so, explain. If not, tell us which mistake you want to avoid, and how you will prepare not to make that mistake.

First Response is due by Thursday, December 5th, 2013 by 6pm.

Second Response is due by Tuesday, December 10th by 6pm.

Week 4 Discussion – Monday/Wednesday

The Cost of Losing an Employee

  1. Research on the internet the “cost in replacing an employee.” Cite at least two web sites where you found this information (copy URL into your response).
  2. Summarize your findings of components of cost that is part of the total cost to replace an employee.
  3. Discuss what options a company has to reduce different components you found in #2.
    • List the cost component
    • Identify how the company might try to reduce that cost  (for example, if the cost is “high recruiter costs,” the company might reduce this cost by stop using a recruiting agency and take on that function in their own Human Resources department if they have the resources to do it).
  4. Give your opinion on how a company can reduce “employee turnover” which will minimize costs in replacing employees.

Please number each response so everyone will be able to more easily identify and respond to each of the four components.

Responses

First Response is due by Wednesday, December 4th by 6pm. This response needs to be at least 200 words and contain 2 Links.

Second Responses (2) are due by Monday, December 9th by 6pm. These should be in response to two of your classmates and be at least 100 words.

Professional Research

Preparation: Research a career of your choice on the internet.

First Response: Tell us about the career you researched. Why did you choose this job? Please provide us with the hyperlinks to three sites that you felt were the most informative on this career path. Tell us why you chose these sites. What should we know about this career? What should we think about while we read the sites you sent us to? (For example, you might research Networking jobs and then have us comment a variety of different theories of security for a company, or you could research Freelance jobs for your career, you may have us discuss why choosing to do Freelance work would be the best choice for your career. I’m looking at you, web people!) Responses should be at least 250 words.

Second Response: Please read two of your classmates’ messages. Please visit the sites that were provided for you. Now please reply to your classmate. What did you learn about this career? Powerful Presentation Practices-Tues/Thurs Class

If your words or images are not on point, making them dance in color won’t make them relevant.–Edward Tufte

Read the following article: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.09/ppt2.html Do you agree or disagree with any of the content? Why or why not? Remember, this was written in 2003, but PowerPoint presentations have not changed much during that time, the program has just become much easier to use. Look for at least two articles that give advice for good PowerPoint presentations. One could also be about what makes a presentation bad.

Copy the links into a word file and answer the questions below about those links:

  1. What relevant points did the article contain?
  2. What new information did you learn?
  3. What information did you disagree with or agree with and why?
  4. Which pieces of information will you keep in mind when creating your own presentation?

Your replies should be more than three sentences, and say more then “I agree.” Don’t repeat information they have given, instead, ask questions, explain why you agree or disagree. It’s a conversation, treat it as one.

First Response is due by Thursday, November 14th before class. It needs to be at least 200 words.

Second Response is due by Tuesday, November 19th before class. It needs to be at least 100 words.

Monday/Wednesday Discussion — Mock Interviews A’Comin’

MOCK INTERVIEWENTION™

Since a couple of you have your 2nd mock interview coming up in the next few weeks, and a few of you will be having your 1st mock interview soon, I thought this an appropriate topic of discussion. Remember, your resume and portfolio are not your only tools for selling yourself during an interview–there are many aspects that should be considered before going into an interview.

Read each of the short articles below first.  Then, I want you to respond to the following questions:

1.  What are the the three most relevant tips from the articles that you are already prepared for? Explain why and how.
2. What are the three most relevant tips that you need to work on?  Explain why.
3. Do you have a hard time selling yourself in general?  Explain why.

When responding to your classmates, be sure you include anything that they can do to overcome what they have a hard time with about selling themselves, how they can work on those relevant tips they listed, and just make sure it is a conversation in general.

Your initial response is due by 5:59 P.M. Wednesday, November 13th.  Your initial response should be 250+ words.

Your responses to two of your classmates are due by 5:59 P.M. Monday, November 18th, 2013. These responses must be at least 75+ words.
